Portland Area Civic Education and Training Resources There are many nonprofit, volunteer, public and educational organizations that provide training and education for citizens. The following list was compiled through the online survey conducted during June and July, 2007. It should not be viewed as a comprehensive directory. It was clear through the survey and interviews that certain organizations come up repeatedly, including TACS, Western States Center, Office of Neighborhood Involvement, and Southeast Uplift. However, the survey was not a scientific sample, so only represents the most known organizations to the activists and practitioners that were surveyed. Several of the organizations, such as TACS and Western States Center, are training institutions. Others, such as the Office of Neighborhood Involvement (ONI), provide training, but is not their primary mission. It was also clear from the survey that there are membership organizations and coalitions that provide training and technical assistance to their members, but not necessarily to the general public. The Community Development Network, the Coalition for Livable future, and Business for Culture and Arts fall in this category. Also, some organizations provide civic education in a variety of forms, such as City Club?s Friday forums and book discussion groups.
